Construction on way to I-70 in Belmont County

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- Interstate 70 is a main artery of transportation through Belmont County, but 70 mph speed limits will soon be reduced as orange barrels move into place.
Some of the projects scheduled along I-70 are simple upkeep of the current infrastructure.
Other projects are more extensive, beginning at the west end of the county near Fairview. Engineers will replace a total of six bridges and culverts that have been in place since the construction of I-70. Plus there will be construction on SR 9.
“The bridges have reached the end of their expected life,” said Jim Graham, construction area engineer. “They were built when the interstate was constructed and have exceeded their life span so they have to be replaced.”
Roadways degrade over time and engineers keep an eye on how much and schedule repaving accordingly. Resurfacing will be completed on 1-470 from the county line to Belmont.
With all of the traffic I-70 sees, drivers can expect delays. But Ohio Department of Transportation officials are asking for patience during construction season and for drivers to be watchful of workers on construction sites.
“We have a lot of traffic along Interstate 70 in Belmont County and now we have a lot of construction on that same highway,” Graham said. “We would hope that the motorists would slow down and help protect our workforce.”
