Day 2: Jurors learn of victim’s injuries in Belmont murder trial

Updated: Tuesday, March 4 2014, 07:07 PM EST
BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio – The second day in the trial for one of the men accused in the rape and killing of 92-year-old Lydia Ashworth in June 2012 ended in a graphic way Tuesday in the Belmont County Courthouse.
Jurors learned more about the injuries Ashworth suffered before or at the time of her death as the state’s seventh and final witness, Dr. Charles Lee from the Licking County Coroner’s Office, took the stand in the case against Devin Wayne Fuller.

Fuller, along with co-defendant Brandon Michael Phelps, is accused of committing the crime.
Lee testified to Ashworth’s injuries.
“Certainly a forceful trauma to break the jaw in two areas and the ribs on the left side,” he said.
Lee also noted countless bruises and a number of internal injuries, saying they definitely blunt force trauma.
Lee believes Ashworth’s cause of death was asphyxia, caused by manual strangulation.
The case is moving at a rapid pace. The judge has told the jury to prepare for sequestration.
Fuller could face the death penalty if convicted.
The trial continues Thursday morning. NEWS9’s Kate Davison will be live tweeting during the proceedings. You can follow her @KateWTOV9 or @WTOV9. Stick with NEWS9 and for updates.
