Hospitals donate $100K to child care advocacy in Belmont County

Updated: Wednesday, August 13 2014, 12:33 PM EDT
BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio - A $100,000 check was presented by East Ohio Regional Hospital to Belmont County's Harmony House on Wednesday, made possible after a significant amount of money was contributed to the hospital by the late Virginia Gasaway of Martins Ferry, earmarked specifically to benefit infants and children.
"We thought this would just be a great place to invest in the community," said EORH Chief Administrative Officer Bernie Albertini.
Harmony House is a children's advocacy center with a child-focused program, allowing prosecutors, law enforcement, child protective service workers and other community leaders to work together to strengthen the response to child abuse.
"This is really going to come in handy and ensure that Harmony House of Belmont exists for all the children in Belmont County that need it," said Leslie Vassilaros, Harmony House executive director.
Harmony House operates solely on grants, donations, and fund-raising efforts.
"Today is just ongoing continued support by (Ohio Valley Medical Center) and EORH to protecting the children of our community," said Belmont County Commissioner Ginny Favede.
"We're huge advocates for these children as parents, not just as leaders of our county," added Vince Gianangeli director of the County Department of Job and Family Services.
The donation by Gasaway also had a significant impact at East Ohio Regional Hospital's obstetric, emergency and anesthesia departments.
