Jarrell changes plea in baby suffocation case

Updated: Friday, May 2 2014, 12:32 PM EDT
BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- Ian Jarrell, a 28-year-old Bridgeport man accused of fatally suffocating a 2-year-old child late last year, has changed his plea.
Two charges were dismissed and another two were amended during a hearing Friday morning.
Prosecutors said Jarrell's previous counts of child endangerment of various degrees duplicated each other, and were basically the same charge.
Those counts were amended to one felony charge of child endangerment. A second, amended charge of involuntary manslaughter was also added.
Jarrell entered pleas of guilty in both of the amended counts.
Prosecutors assured Judge John Solovan II the decision to amend these charges was appropriate, considering the circumstances, the evidence, and the fact that law enforcement and family members gave their blessing.
The case involves the death of 2-year-old Matthew Caprita, who was found dead Oct. 1, 2013 at a Bellaire home. At the time, Caprita was in the care of then 27-year-old Jarrell, who was babysitting for his girlfriend, the child's mother, Allisha Alltop.
Jarrell is accused of abusing, then fatally suffocating the boy.
Ultimately Friday, Jarrell admitted guilt to two felony charges of involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.
He could face a maximum sentence of up to 19 years in prison for both felony charges.
A sentencing date of June 6 was set as we continue to follow new developments in this tragic story.
