Local business finds salt … for now

Updated: Monday, March 3 2014, 12:38 PM EST

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Salt shortage has been an issue with some local business as the winter weather continued this weekend.

Scott Campbell, owner of M&M True Value Hardware on Sunset Blvd., is trying to stay ahead.

They ran out of salt around 4 p.m. Sunday, but were able to obtain six skids of salt Monday. They usually like buying it by the tractor trailer, but given the weather this winter, it’s just not available.

“We’ve got several sources,” Campbell said. “It’s like three different outlets for it so hopefully each one of them can take care of a little bit here and there. It’s been a rough winter.”

Several years ago, they ran out of salt at M&M, but Sunday marked the first time this winter they hadn’t had any.

Sidewalks on the boulevard still need to be shoveled but the roadways are looking much clearer.

Mike Streen, owner of Mike’s Sweeper Center, stopped by M&M to load on salt for his business.

“We’ve got some sidewalks in front of our store,” Streen said. “We just want to make it safer for our customers. I’m elated we didn’t get hit that hard.”

Campbell did say they may run out of salt again Monday so it might be a good idea to get out early and stock up it while it’s available.
