BELLAIRE, Ohio --

A Belmont County man has been charged with aggravated murder after allegations he suffocated and killed a toddler.

Bellaire police arrested Ian Jarrell, of Bridgeport, in the death of 2-year-old Carter Matthew Caprita.

The toddler was found dead Oct.1 at his Bellaire home while in the care of Jarrell. A coroner's report lists the cause of death as suffocation.

Jarrell is the boyfriend of Alisha Alltop, the toddler's mother. Officials said Jarrell served as a pallbearer at the toddler's funeral this week.

Officials said Alltop is also being questioned, but she was at work when her son died and has not been charged. An ambulance was called to the scene, but the toddler was already dead when help arrived.

Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk said, "We haven't gotten much sleep since this has occurred, I will say that. It works on everyone involved in the investigation that did what they can to save this child's life."
