BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- A Monroe County court is announcing a brand new partnership with Belmont County that aims to serve the youth in the communities.
The program is a proven effective tool in combatting non-compliance in schools. In fact, the Belmont County Juvenile Court Alternative School has been serving the youth in the county for 15 or 16 years. And now, Monroe County is jumping on board.
It's an opportunity that offers the Monroe County Juvenile Court and the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District an alternative educational setting for juveniles who are placed on suspension or require an alternative setting in order to meet their educational requirements.
Within this program, there are three parts.
If a child gets suspended due to behavior, instead of sitting at home, they can be monitored in a classroom where there's a teacher and an education process.
Or, if students don't anticipate graduating from high school, they can earn their GED.
Finally, there's a virtual learning program, or an online schooling portion, where if students taking online courses don't keep up with, or complete, their assignments in a timely manner, there's a classroom with teachers and probation officers who oversee the children.
Overall, Monroe County Juvenile Judge Clifford Sickler says it’s a tremendous opportunity for Belmont's neighboring county.
"It shows the leadership in the region that comes from Belmont County,” Sickler said. “I think they've been a good friend to Monroe County quite a bit."
In fact, Sickler says Monroe County is wasting no time in getting the alternative program up and running.
He says three juveniles are attending summer school right now and getting good grades. As far as transportation to the alternative school in Belmont County, which can sometime be an issue for multiple county programs, Sickler says the court is fortunate to have established a working relationship with Monroe County Public Transportation in making this program possible.
