BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- In May 2012, a fire tragically overtook the historic St. Mary Church in Lafferty, Ohio.
As we approach the 2-year anniversary of a tragedy the town of Months after the fire, the debris was cleared, but the property remained vacant.
Bishop Jeffrey Monforton with the Diocese of Steubenville has declared the church will not be rebuilt.
Diocese spokeswoman Pat DeFrancis says it's all part of the long-term plan based around the declining number of parishioners and priests.
But DeFrancis did note there are plans, of a different sort, in very early stages of development.
She released information to me this morning, saying, in part, “In the future, there are very basic plans for small structure to be built near the area of the former church to accommodate mourners near the cemetery.”
DeFrancis stressed those plans, are not for certain just yet.
Officials have said the people formerly of St. Mary Church are welcome to attend mass at any church in the diocese.
