St. Clairsville man pleads guilty to fraud

Updated: Friday, June 27 2014, 02:27 PM EDT
BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- A St. Clairsville man has pled guilty to fraud after investigators with the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation found he was submitting false paperwork in order to receive workplace injury benefits.
The Ohio BWC received an internal allegation from a claims service specialist that Charles Oberdick wasn't performing job searches and was submitting falsified job search forms in order to continue receiving benefits.
Oberdick pled guilty to one count of workers' compensation fraud Friday. He was receiving non-working wage loss, which is payable to injured workers who are unable to find suitable employment.
The investigation showed Oberdick knowingly misrepresented the majority of his job searches. As a result, the BWC paid benefits to Oberdick he was not entitled to receive.
In a statement issued by BWC administrator and CEO Steve Buehrer, he said “BWC’s goal is to get injured workers healthy and back on the job as soon as possible. Falsifying paperwork in order to continue benefits is not only contrary to that goal, it is a crime that unfairly draws employer premiums dollars from the state insurance fund."
Oberdick will have a suspended sentence of 90 days in jail under the conditions that he pay court costs and restitution more than $2,000.
