St. Clairsville Middle School students learn about Heart Month

Updated: Thursday, February 13 2014, 05:17 PM EST

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio. -- Wheeling Hospital played host to an event at St. Clairsville Middle School on Thursday afternoon for February’s American Hearth Month where students were taught all about healthy hearts.

More than 100 7th graders sat in to hear from a variety of speakers to discuss the dangers of smoking and the importance of diet and exercise.

“Age 12 and 13 is such a vulnerable age,” said Cara Gazdik, nurse manager of staff development at the Schiffler Cancer Center. “This is when they start into the smoking and those other risk-taking behaviors that eventually lead to heart disease.”

The event was done to help students control heart disease risk factors at an early age and educate them on what they will need to know how to do next week when they will receive a CPR Anytime Kit and be taught CPR.
