Suspect returns to scene of crime, is nabbed in Lansing

Updated: Tuesday, August 12 2014, 12:09 PM EDT
LANSING, Ohio -- A suspect returned to the scene of a crime twice in the same night and wound up in jail, thanks to quick response from local authorities.
Sheriff Dave Lucas called it a case of good police work. A deputy following up on a call not just once, but twice, as this particular incident ended in an arrest. The first call was dispatched around 3:30 on Sunday morning. A resident at Lansing Garden Apartments dialed 911, saying someone was trying to get inside. Belmont County Sheriff's Deputies responded with no such luck.
Then, approximately an hour, hour and a half later, 911 got another from the same person. The perp was back. Another quick response by deputies, Bridgeport Police and the Ohio State Highway Patrol brought different results with Deputy Brian Carpenter leading the charge.
"Deputy Carpenter saw the person, took chase, and ran him down, and caught him," Lucas said.
As a result, 29-year-old Nicholas James Divittorio was sent to jail, facing several charges --  burglary, possession of criminal tools, failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer and breaking and entering.
Lucas said a motive remains unclear.
"He had criminal tools on, there were signs of attempted or forced entry,” Lucas said. “The exact motive, unless they tell you, is unknown."
But the moral of the story is, if you have a legitimate problem, don't hesitate to call authorities, according to Lucas.
"If you hear a noise, don't open the door, don't answer the door,” he said. “Call 911. That's what we're here for."
Divittorio is still in custody under a $1,100 bond.
