BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- It was a traffic tie up you just couldn't ignore if you were in or around the St. Clairsville area late last week -- especially, for those drivers at a standstill on I-70.
Engineers at the Ohio Department of Transportation Morristown garage said "two separate issues on two different days" are to blame for quite the disruption in area traffic flow.
On Thursday, ODOT Engineer Jim Graham pinpointed a "grade issue" and an emergency paving job on I-70.
He said construction crews paved a portion of the highway overnight, but a slope, in particular, was creating an issue for heavy traffic. Graham said he didn't feel comfortable leaving the area open.
A paving crew was ready to go at 6:30 on Thursday morning, but was rained out. And crews had to wait until the area was dry to correct the grade, ultimately shutting down traffic in the area.
Then, on Friday, a crash resulting in minor injuries in another construction zone at I-70 westbound and Ohio 9 took place after authorities say a driver fell asleep at the wheel.
Engineers are replacing a total of six bridges and culverts in Belmont County that have been in place since the construction of I-70. And the infrastructure has reached the end of its expected life span.
There is a lot of traffic along I-70 and ODOT officials are asking drivers to be alert and to slow down.
