Trek the Trail program encourages fitness

Updated: Tuesday, July 8 2014, 05:45 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va.--

The Wheeling National Heritage Area Corporation is hoping to encourage residents in the Ohio Valley to get active and participate in the Trek the Trail program.

Participants must sign up at www.trekthetrail.org. and log their trek.

Upon signing up for the program you will receive a free pedometer, emails and information from members discussing upcoming events.

Chris Villamagna, grant coordinator for WNHAC, said the program was made possible from a grant obtained from the National Parks Foundation.

Villamagna said it's partly to promote the great trails in the area.

"They're wonderful rails to trails converted from old rail beds and they're really important and actually a big draw for tourism," said Villamagna.

Villamagna said the group would like you to utilize Wheeling's great trails, but you don't have to - she said you must simply exercise to participate.

"I think it's important because West Virginia has one of the highest rates of obesity and we know there is a problem with what we eat, but if we just get moving," said Villamagna.

The program runs until October and by signing up you could receive a great prize including a bike, tennis shoes and other workout-oriented gear.
