Ultimate sacrifices honored in Beallsville

Updated: Thursday, July 24 2014, 12:42 PM EDT
BEALLSVILLE, Ohio – Beallsville Legion Post 768 is flying more than 100 flags in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice from Monroe County.
One-hundred thirty-three stakes were hammered into the ground with an American flag adoring each one -- a commemorative symbol for each one of the servicemen who gave the ultimate sacrifice serving their country since World War I.
"It's very touching, to me,” Beallsville American Legion Commander Chuck Davis said.
Also on display was a tank used in Vietnam with flags beside it to honor the 11 Monroe County men who lost their lives in Vietnam.
It’s visual reminder that freedom isn't free.
"You see all these flags out here,” Davis said. “It means something to somebody.”
It's a serene commemoration to honor those who've served their country from Monroe County. It’s also a kickoff to a commemoration benefit to be held this weekend, as the American Legion Auxiliary 768 will hold its 11th annual Beallsville Remembers All Who Gave Poker Run.
But first, there will be a square dance at 8 p.m. Friday at the Legion. And then Saturday, bikes are out for the poker run from at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They'll also have an auction and a band. It's $20 per person or $25 per couple for the poker run.
All proceeds go to American Legion Veterans Benefit.
