BELLAIRE, Ohio – Employees at the Electronics Recycling Service building said it was the smell of smoke that signified to them something was wrong Thursday morning in Bellaire, when a fire engulfed the building around 10 a.m.
“We hurried up grabbed a fire extinguisher and went looking for it,” employee Jeff Finnicum said. “And it just started in the chain room and it just took off. We heard a ‘whoosh’ and flames just shot overhead. I worked here and I loved it. It’s just upsetting.”
All 29 employees were able to get out safely, according to general manager Jim Johnston.
“It’s sad to see especially now that we have 29 employees,” Johnson said. “These people are home now wondering what’s going to happen. Where are we going to go in the future? What's the status of ERS here before we’re back up and operational?”
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and it’s still too early to say but firefighters say it started in the basement of the three-floor-building.
As of 12:30 p.m., crews had torn down a side of the building to access the fire but it was still far from under control.
No injuries were reported and multiple crews responded to the call.
