Bridge issues cause Rt. 2 traffic woes

Traffic is being restricted along W.Va. 2 in Follansbee, but it isn’t for a construction project.

The small section of the highway near Archer Hill Road is down to one lane in both directions thanks to a nearby bridge on Veterans Drive being closed to trucks. Last month, an inspection of the structure, owned by Koppers, revealed some issues putting a 3-ton weight restriction in place.

To prevent hurting business of nearby companies, it was decided to reroute the trucks through Mountain State Carbon and close the lanes. City Manager John DeStefano said it was the only safe option Koppers had after discussions with the Division of Highways.

"Those guys coming up out of that hill have to cross two lanes of southbound traffic and two lanes of northbound traffic. It could have been a dangerous situation," he said.

While it may be an inconvenience for drivers, DeStefano told NEWS9 the changes are temporary while officials are working on alternatives. Those include building a new bridge and opening a secondary access road nearby.

It’s unknown when W.Va. 2 will reopen entirely.

"We do not know that at this time. It all depends on how quickly they react to the bridge or this other road. If we can get this other road done, it would be a much quicker time frame," DeStefano said.

In the meantime, a flagger, paid for by Koppers, will remain at the intersection 24-7 and will stop traffic as needed.

DeStefano said residents have already been notified, but he wants everyone to be careful.

"Just be aware coming through there because you're down to one lane. Coming out of Highland Hills is a little difficult at times, but everyone is coping with it," he said.
