BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. - Students at Brooke High School are gearing up to head to the nation's capital after being named best robotics team in West Virginia.
Members of the Technology Student Association at the school won first place in the Vex Robotics Competition for the West Virginia TSA State Conference, and now they're preparing to compete against TSA members nationwide.
"It was just really cool to be able to make (a robot) and be like 'we actually did this,'" student Courtney Fiber said.
Six students worked together to create a robot, which is programmed to function with and without a remote.
"To be the state winner for the Vex Competition for robotics we're really excited about that," said Chris Mockbee, TSA advisor. "I'm real proud of all the work they've done."
He said students worked about 20 hours to get the robot competition-ready.
"The robot we've got is a real nice design," he said. "It's not real fancy and complicated, but by keeping it simple, we've been real successful."
They have two months to add functions to the robot for the national competition in June.
The project isn't just helping build technical knowledge.
"I like going to different places and different competitions." Fiber said. "You meet a whole lot of different people and actually feel comfortable getting in front of them and talking to them."
