Council members struggle to agree on budget

Updated: Thursday, March 27 2014, 08:01 AM EDT

Follansbee, W.Va. -

The Follansbee City Council met on Monday to approve their budget for 2014-15 but members decided to hold a special budget meeting on Wednesday night to make some last minute changes.

On Wednesday night council members still had a hard time coming to an agreement.

The $2.7 million budget presented for the 2014-15 fiscal year was read aloud, but more than half of the city council members said no.

The issue: $200,000 was allocated for street paving for this year but there was no money saved for paving roads next year.

Many council members shared their concerns about the possibility of not seeing any money being saved to go toward paving roads next year.

After an hour passed, many showed frustration to the fact that the city had to meet the Friday deadline because they couldn’t decide where to make cuts.

After much discussion, council members finally decided on their budget, cutting $50,000 from the city building fund to go into a new paving account for next year.

“After a lot of discussion back and forth, council approved the budget for right now. We’re going to look at things as we go along,” Follansbee City Manager John Destefano said.

The council plans to see what money is left over from this fiscal year so it can go toward the next year. They can also amend the budget after the deadline.
