BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. – A mobile wall that pays tribute to West Virginia's Vietnam Veterans is making its way through Brooke County.
The wall’s journey started in Weirton, went through Follansbee and stopped at Central Park in Wellsburg in time for the city’s annual 4th of July holiday celebration.
"It represents 732 gentlemen and ladies and 17 missing in action that were killed in Vietnam," said Greg Cheeks, who served in the Army in Thailand from 1967-1970.
Cheeks worked hard to get the wall to Central Park and now that it is there, he looks at names of some fallen soldiers he knew, including some high school buddies who gave their lives for our country.
“Eighty-seven percent of the people in the United States are honoring the Vietnam Veterans,” Cheeks said. “They realize now that it wasn't our fault. It was a war not that we wanted. We were there because our government sent us."
That honor is visible in Wellsburg. Dozens of American flags flew everywhere in and around Central Park and even on the back of motorcycles driven by Red Knight bikers who traveled with the wall.
“I feel honored for us to be asked to do it,” Red Knights President John Ashcraft said.
“There are so many memories of the Vietnam War and to pay respect to the people that gave their lives for our country and the sacrifices that they made,” Brooke County Commissioner Tim Ennis said. “(For) Brooke County and Wellsburg to recognize that, I think it's wonderful,"
