Follansbee considers new police officer

Follansbee, W.Va. --

City leaders in Follansbee are working to decide if there is enough money in the budget to hire one more full-time police officer.  Currently, there are five full-time officers, which is down one from earlier in the year.

When city leaders went to do the budget earlier this year they found fewer dollars to spread across several departments.  The police department was cut by about $100,000.

“There is no secret looking up and down the valley with the industry where it is, our revenues were going to be cut this year, so they made some cuts to several departments.  They cut the police department, public works and across the board,” city manager John DeStefano said.

Follansbee's police chief is eager to find a resolution, saying adding one would just be getting the department back to six officers, where it was just a few months ago.

However, city leaders said they may have to come up with a creative solution to deal with the budget crunch, and that could mean hiring a few part-time officers.

“We like to think Follansbee is a safe community.  Yes, there are some issues, and we'll do the best we can with what we have to work with right now,” DeStefano said.

The city manager says that City Council members, the mayor and police chief will work in the coming weeks to hold workshops to determine how to best move forward.
