Follansbee, W.Va.--

Follansbee has hosted a commemorative event on Sept. 11 for the last 11 years, but this year, the city added a new event:  the Remember 9/11 Memorial Patriot Walk.

Wednesday evening, more than 30 people came out to James Funeral Home, where the walk started.  Area firefighters, police officers and members of the community gathered for a moment of silence and prayer before beginning the 1-mile walk up Main Street and back down Follansbee Park.

Owner of the funeral home, Eric Fithyan, said organizing the walk was a way to bring the community together and bring back a sense of unity that was felt in the days after the attacks on the World Trade Center.

“To have the U.S. Army there to present colors, local firefighters that are coming out just to remember the great sacrifices, and just to build a community together,” Fithyan said.

Those who participated in the walk made their way to the 6 p.m. vigil at Follansbee Park.  A service there was led by Mayor Emeritus Tony Paesano, and First Judicial Circuit Court Judge James Mazzone was the guest speaker.
