Former softball coach charged with possession of child pornography appears in court

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va - A former softball coach facing child pornography charges spoke out Wednesday in a Brooke County courtroom about his "non-violent" offense.

The simple finding of a flash drive in a softball field parking lot all led to James Sepik's court appearance today.

Sepik, who appeared without an attorney, requested a continuance to his preliminary hearing which was granted and also for a bond reduction because he claimed that his charges were a non-violent offense.
Sepik was arrested on Aug. 2.

West Virginia State Police said a parent of a softball player in Follansbee found a flash drive in a ballfield parking lot in late June. The parent took the flash drive home to a computer and found several personal documents that apparently belonged Sepik.

The parent then turned the thumb drive over to the Brooke County Sheriff's Department and the state police was notified. Police said they found more than 1,000 pornographic images of children on it.

The pictures that they recovered were not of girls on the team or anyone he knew, but of downloaded images from the Internet.

Sepik addressed the court specifically on the issue of bond, arguing that he was a non-violent offender and his bond should be lower.

"It was a non-violent offense what I did, and I've never been in trouble before in my life," Sepik said. "I have a house and kids to help take care of."

His bond was not reduced and he was taken back to Northern Regional Jail. As of right, now a date for his next court appearance hasn't been set.

Brooke County prosecutor Joe Barki said that in addition to the four counts of possession of child pornography, Sepik could potentially be charged with hundreds of counts, one for each picture on the flash drive.
