BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- Fallen soldiers and veterans will soon be part of a book in remembrance of their service.
It's called the Military Heroes Project, and the people who are heading it need the public’s help to find military heroes who live or have lived in Brooke, Hancock and Ohio counties. Project members at the Brooke County Museum are eager to find the stories of veterans throughout the area.
“We started this project essentially because we found out that it had been started in another section of the state, but nothing had been done with this area at all,” Museum Director Ruby Greathouse said.
The finished project will include pictures and stories of veterans. Combat stories won't be the focus of book.
"I would like for them to find out how things were when these people went into the service?” Greathouse said. “What kind of conditions there were? Why did they join the service? Why did they go to that particular branch?"
Greathouse wants any and everyone who knows or knew of a veteran to fill out an interviewee registration form as soon as possible so their story can make it into the first volume of the book.
"We are losing -- across the United States – more than 600 veterans from World War II each day, and so we need to catch them when we can," Greathouse said.
Veteran Doug Lilly is busy getting forms out to all the veterans he knows.
"I think it's a great project, it will be great, yeah,” he said. “I like being in it -- everybody would. I know a lot of veterans that I'm going to get in that book, a lot of them."
The first volume of the Military Hero book is set to release Memorial Day 2015.
The deadline for the first volume is Sept. 1. People who submit information for the book after that date will have their story in the second volume of the book.
Members of the project are passing out forms throughout the Ohio Valley.
