BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- What started as a routine check-up quickly escalated into a full-blown investigation last week.
It’s centered around a man found dead in his home along Tent Church Road on April 22.
Officials said upon their arrival, they received no response from the man that lived there, 56-year-old Patrick Thomas.
Sheriff Chuck Jackson said he then gave the go-ahead to enter the home. Once they entered, they noticed a smell that is associated with a decomposing body.
When deputies searched the house, they discovered Thomas' body.
Evidence found at the scene suggests that foul play was involved. “The circumstances surrounding how the body was found indicate to us that the person who did this didn't want the body to be found,” Jackson said. “And therefore, we determined that Mr.  Thomas was the victim of a homicide.”
Thomas' body has been taken to the state Medical Examiners Office in Charleston. A cause of death is not being released at this time.
In a related matter, the Hancock County Sheriff's Office assisted with the Brooke county sheriff's office to serve a warrant.
Bruce David Reinhardt, 22, was arrested in the area of Holbert's Road in Hancock County.
Reinhardt refused to come out of the home and had to be forcibly removed by members of the special response team.
Brooke county officials initially wished to question Reinhardt in connection with Thomas' death.
Reinhardt is being held at the Northern Regional Jail. No further information on the Thomas investigation is being released as the Sheriff's Office continues to investigate and interview people about the matter.
