BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- The Brooke County Ambulance Excess Levy was a hot topic in the county in the hours before the polls open.
If approved, it would raise nearly $800,000 for five years to be divided among 10 agencies.
"The levy helps us do our everyday operations," Brooke County EMT Eric Smith said. "Without the levy, it could be detrimental to our services to the community."
Voters will decide if the Ambulance Levy will continue as it is to keep emergency and non-emergency medical support to residents in the county.
But the levy money supports much more, such as the health department, WVU extension service, parks and recreation, the public library, and more.
For all these agencies, there would be cuts in service if the levy does not pass.
"Because the County Commission does not have the funding to go out and supplement these agencies, there would be drastic cuts of these agencies if these levies aren't approved," Brooke County Commissioner Tim Ennis said.
This levy would also provide around $55,000 for repairs and improvements to the County Courthouse.
And for this levy to pass, it must be approved by 60 percent of voters.
