WEIRTON, W.Va. --

An effort to control the deer population started Monday in Weirton.

About 300 residents of Hancock and Brooke County are participating in the city’s annual controlled bow hunt.

All of the participating hunters must already have the necessary state permits and took part in three mandatory meetings earlier in September.

In additional to thinning the deer population, Lt. Greg Moodie with the Weirton Police Department said they have also seen a decline in the number of deer vs. vehicle crashes.

“Those incidents have gone down drastically since we’ve instituted the city bow hunt, so it makes the roadway(s) safer for both motorists and the deer.  They would get hit and we’d have to take care of them in that way, so it’s a win-win for everybody,” Moodie said.

The Weirton city bow hunt lasts through Dec. 31.
