BROOKE COUNYTY, W.Va. A local transit is seeing more riders on its bus route, but transit officials may not be able to meet the demand without additional funding.
Several people who use Weirton Transit attended the Brooke County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, letting commissioners know how important the bus service is for them.
Ridership has more than doubled within the past few years from 27,000 to nearly 60,000 riders. That, in turn, has made it hard for bus drivers to keep up with the demand.
Ridership has just exploded on us recently, Weirton Transit Manager Kevin Beynon said. Its outpacing where we are with trying to be able to keep up with the funding and handle the ridership that we have right now."
Beynon told commissioners how dedicated his bus drivers are to their growing number of passengers and how more funding is needed in order to keep up with the demand.
It makes me feel good that our employees are doing such a good job, that so many people are wanting to ride the bus, but we have to be able to provide good enough service to be able to take care of the people that are wanting it, Beynon said.
Elsie Saleh, who rides the bus almost daily, told commissioners how much she depends on Weirton Transit to get her around.
Id like to see everybody ride the bus and enjoy it because we've got great people and it's very tranquil, she said.
Commissioners say theyre willing to help if they can.
In years past, the county commission has supported the Weirton Transit with a $5,000 line in budget item, Brooke County Commissioner Tim Ennis said. They've come this year and asked us to consider that again. We paid for that in years past out of our economic development line item and there is some money in that. We have to wait and see what all of that money looks like at the end of the year, but if there is money in there, we want to continue to support that.
Transit officials say without additional funding there will be some routes that will be cut.
