BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. --

About 100 bikes will hit the pavement Saturday afternoon in Wellsburg.  The 7th annual Race for a Cure motorcycle ride raises funds for the American Cancer Society.  The event hits close to home for the city’s mayor who is a 12-year cancer survivor.

While Mayor Sue Simonetti celebrates a life cancer-free, her sister died from breast cancer, which serves as motivation to keep the Wellsburg Ride for a Cure going year after year.

“I can’t even explain to you how rewarding it is to see everyone come out and have the community generously give,” Simonetti  said.

Looking back on photos of past rides, the mayor tells NEWS9 that she is filled with great joy seeing her community pull together to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.  She also knows that someone in every household is somehow touched by the disease.

"Just being the mayor, I guess that calls attention to it a little bit more for me.  I don't like to use that title as a promotion for the (American) Cancer Society, but it truly does help me and the community.  When they see how hard you work and continue to work.  You know, cancer isn't necessarily a death sentence anymore,” Simonetti said.

Last year’s Ride for a Cure brought in $3,000, and about 100 bikers participated in the ride.  Simonetti hopes to bring in the same if not more on Saturday.

Registration takes place at 2 p.m. at Wellsburg Banquet Hall on 12th Street.  The fee is $20 for one rider and $10 for an additional rider.  General admission is $10 for the dinner, soft drinks and entertainment that follow the ride at the End of Run Party also set to take place the Wellsburg Banquet Hall.
