Wellsburg woman accused of stealing from Girl Scouts

Updated: Thursday, March 6 2014, 01:05 PM EST

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. – A Wellsburg woman was indicted by the Brooke County Grand Jury Wednesday.

Amy Baker is accused of stealing approximately $6,000 from the Girl Scouts of America. The alleged crime occurred between May 9 and July 19, 2013.

Brooke County Prosecutor Joe Barki said it was a direct indictment against Amy Baker, and she was never arrested. She was indicted on a fraud scheme charge, which indicates that the alleged theft occurred over a longer period of time.

According to the criminal complaint, a volunteer with the Girls Scouts of America received overdraft notices from First National Bank, which prompted the volunteer to contact authorities.

“The Girl Scouts of America became aware that an excessive amount of money was missing,” Barki said. “(It was) money that was not really allocated to be used and for that reason. They got law enforcement involved and started investigating.”

Authorities learned from the volunteer that Baker was given a debit card to make purchases solely for the Girl Scouts.

Most of the charges, according to the criminal complaint, came from Kroger, Mark's Carry Out and Dollar General in Wellsburg.

On Aug. 23, Baker interviewed with authorities, where she advised them she was an assistant troop leader for The Black Diamond Council of Girl Scouts, and she did have account and purchasing responsibilities with the position.

Baker also allegedly told authorities she made numerous personal purchases, as well as money withdrawals.

If convicted of the fraud scheme charge, Baker faces a possible sentence of 1-10 years in jail, but the court does have the option of using some type of alternative sentence.

NEWS9 reached out to the Girl Scouts of America for comment, but has not yet heard back.

Baker and the other individuals indicted Wednesday by the Grand Jury are scheduled to appear in court for their arraignments on Tuesday.
