The school cashier accused of embezzling $500,000 from Bethany College turned herself in to authorities Tuesday.

Shelly Lough had a warrant issued for her arrest and turned herself in as soon as she was notified. She posted bond and is out of jail.

She faces two felony charges.

Brooke County Prosecutor Joe Barki said he is happy with the way the investigation has gone to this point. He added Lough is the only school employee involved in the embezzlement.

“There’s still an ongoing investigation involving tangently related criminal procedures. There’s a lot of follow up that needs done at this point. In terms of charges against Miss Lough, the great majority of that investigation had been concluded,” Barki said.

The investigation has been ongoing for about six weeks. The crimes were allegedly committed over a 12- to 24-month span.

Bethany College Vice President Sven De Jong issued a statement. “We are pleased to see the legal process continue to move forward. The college will continue to pursue all avenues to recover the funds that were stolen.”

If convicted, Lough could face one to 10 years in the state penitentiary on either felony charge. Her preliminary hearing should happen within the next 20 days.
