EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio – Retired championship-winning football coach Lou Holtz isn't only known for his work on the field.
His charity work throughout the Valley is equally recognizable.
The Lou Holtz Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame in East Liverpool is about more than Holtz’s success, it’s about the success of the community.
To Holtz, giving back to others is not something to second guess.  Holtz has funded the annual Life Improvement Scholarship program for the past 15 years throughout the tri-state area.
This year, they’re making a few changes with it.
“Coach and Mrs. Holtz decided that they can better help the students in the Valley by giving a larger scholarship to fewer students,” said Rosemary Mackall, director of development at the Hall.
Instead of receiving a list of names from local schools, the Hall of Fame has formed a committee that will select six applicants.
Each will be awarded $5,000 per year from Holtz for up to two years to attend a two-year technical school.
“It costs so much to go to school today that $1,000 barely buys the books a student needs,” Mackall said. “Coach and his wife feel that by increasing the scholarship to the $5,000 amount per year that will better help the student with their education.”
Since the program started in 1999, Holtz has given more than a half a million dollars.
“It very rewarding to see the students who come through here with their teachers,” Mackall said. “Coach is very fond of this area, as is his wife. Anything he can do to help anyone here with their education and go on with their career that's what he wants to do.”
Another big event the Hall of Fame holds is coming up this summer in the annual induction banquet.
This year, Bernie Allen, Bobby Douglas, Harry Rhoads and Jim Rohr are being honored. The guest speaker will be Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
