Chief speaks to NEWS9 about certification

Updated: Friday, September 6 2013, 12:28 AM EDT

Wellsville, OH ---

On Thursday NEWS9 caught up with Wellsville Fire Chief Bill Smith for the first time since learning his state certification expired in 2009.

On Wednesday afternoon the Ohio Department of Public Safety confirmed that no matter what level, volunteer, fire chief, or inspector, the individual must have a current certification to practice legally in Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety also confirmed Wednesday that the mayor of Wellsville did speak to the executive director of EMS roughly a month ago regarding the certification of Bill Smith. The executive director explained the re-certification requirements and process at that time, and Smith was advised of his status and the steps that would be needed to be taken to re-certify.

Smith has been with the department for 41 years and now for the first time he’ll be on the sideline.

“I’m just on vacation for a month,” said Smith.

During a conversation with NEWS9 Smith seemed upset and confused about the situation. He says he wants clarity out of the state.

Before that conversation council held an emergency meeting where they appointed Dave Lloyd as a callout fireman.

Lloyd will help fill any scheduling needs created by Smith’s absence.
