An early morning fire at an apartment complex in East Liverpool, Ohio, has left several residents without a place to stay.

Officials are working determine what started the blaze.

Flames at the building broke out around 5:30 a.m. Friday destroying two of the units.

“It started in 359 and started in the bedroom area, we're not exactly sure,” said East Liverpool fire department Asst. Chief Jeff Kreefer. “There was just a single female in that unit and she was able to get out safely. We're just not exactly sure, the cause is under investigation. But we've got a pretty good idea”

Neighbors tell NEWS9 they woke up to the smell of smoke, unaware of what was happening.

“It was absolutely nuts, I mean we couldn't see anything, it was hard to breathe. We had a resident that had oxygen and we were worried about the tanks and everything with him, so it was nuts,” said Justin Wasko.

Firefighters on the scene told NEWS9 it could have been worse. A fire wall between units prevented the fire from spreading quickly.

“From the back of the apartment where I saw it started to spread, it literally stopped like inches before it got to my apartment. So I'm very fortunate,” said Wasko.

The Red Cross has been called in to assist the families displaced by the fire.

Six unites were affected by the fire.
