WELLSVILLE, Ohio - Wellsville's search for a new village police chief is entering its third month -- and the vacancy still exists.
The troubling part for residents is there is no timeframe for when they can expect this issue to be resolved. At a packed council chambers with residents and council members all hoping for an answer to the same question, there was one noticeable absence Tuesday night.
Mayor Susan Haugh wasn't there.
With no mayor present, there's been no police chief recommendation for council to vote on since they it opposed her appointment of Mike Hardy, 6-0, in July.
"It's the mayor's appointment," Personnel Chairperson Randy Allmon said. "There's no way that we can override her. We can only vote on any appointment that she may make."
It's an issue that residents fear has no end in sight. The question was presented several times: How many times can the mayor make a recommendation that council doesn't support?
"According to the solicitor, she can bring it up every two weeks - at every meeting," Allmon said. "And her term is another year and a half."
Despite the distractions, Lt. Ed Wilson presented figures to council, highlighting 122 reports that the department has handled during the 3-month long look.
Among them:
9 child abuse cases
8 drug overdoses
5 thefts
2 discharged fire arms
2 juvenile arson cases
1 armed robbery
1 homicide
"As far as what's going on with the street and the chief and stuff, that's a lot of stress on everybody, including the department," Wilson said. "But we're still working on things, and we're managing to get them done."
Council and residents hope it's an issue that can be resolved soon.
"We have so many other problems in this town," Allmon said. "We have to move on. It seems like the village cannot move on from this particular issue until we appoint a chief."
This issue could be revisited when the mayor returns. Their next council meeting schedule for 6 p.m. Aug. 19.
