Signs posted warning ATV riders at Yellow Creek

Updated: Thursday, August 7 2014, 07:01 PM EDT
COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio -- After years of trespassers on private property that spans over two counties in Ohio, a law firm has sought help from the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office to keep ATV riders out for good.
ATV riders were surprised when they drove past the signs Thursday.
“I'm honestly in shock,” said ATV rider Susan Brat. “I didn't think they'd ever do anything."
She couldn't help but take a picture of one of three signs now posted at the entrance to the Yellow Creek Grounds in Wellsville. Some people even stopped and read the sign, wondering what this could mean for the thousands who ride on the trail regularly.
“I'm just not allowed to be on them suddenly?” Brat asked.
The sign is a clear warning coming directly from the Columbiana County Sheriff, who says if officers catch people trespassing on the property, they will face criminal charges. That means everyone -- though Brat says the signs should be geared toward the thousands of out-of-towners who frequent the land.
"Little by little, more trails are made, fences are broke down,” Brat said. “The beer bottles that everyone finds -- it's just outrageous. There are still people that just enjoy riding like it’s a hobby, not just a drinking fest."
A law firm representing one of the landowners sent a letter out to the sheriff to keep ATV riders off of hundreds of acres of their. Officials from Planck Solutions – a company that owns part of that land -- became concerned when they were recently made aware that a large number of ATV riders were destroying the property.
Planck Trading Solutions is said to be in the process of building on top of its part of that property. Construction could begin as soon one year.
