A first look at Weirton Elementary School

Updated: Friday, August 8 2014, 05:22 PM EDT
HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. – Officials in Hancock County are ready to open the doors to a brand new elementary school for the start of the school year.
It’s a project that started in 2010 when county voters passed a bond levy that led to the building of the brand new Weirton Elementary school.
The construction took 4 years -- since that time, Liberty, Broadview, and Weirton Heights all closed down -- and staff and students are so excited to utilize all it the new school to offer.
"The classrooms are ready,” Principal Frank Carey said. “The teachers have been in."
The school is 105,000 square feet and includes a cafeteria, classrooms, to not one, but two new gyms, and a cutting edge computer lab. It will be home to students pre-school to 4th grade, and will feature three separate areas for learning for each grade.
They've also chosen to have classroom libraries so every classroom has a library with anywhere from 300 to 1,000 books, giving kids daily access.
"Another exciting thing is by the end of September, we will have two playgrounds -- one for the preschool and Kindergarden and another for grades 1-4," Carey said.
Among the safety features are 68 cameras located all throughout the hallways and what Carey calls a ‘man trap' at the entrance. When a visitor comes in, they have to ring a bell, go through the main office, present their driver’s license and get photographed for a visitor’s badge. The office will hold onto the license so they will know exactly who is coming in and out of the building at all times.
And it doesn't stop there. The building has brand new locks and even blinds that you can see out of it but no one can see in.
"We have watched every aspect of it,” Carey said, “and one thing that will be really exciting is when people tour our buildings, we have a showcase from trees to dirt to the beginning of the foundation to now and now seeing it all finished. We just cannot wait to have children in our building."
On Sunday, there will be a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. On Friday, Aug. 15, there will be a ‘Meet the Teach’ day for students to get acclimated and all ready to go for the first day of school coming up on Aug. 20.
