Groups want to increase housing opportunities in Bethany

Updated: Tuesday, July 1 2014, 06:11 PM EDT
BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany Mayor Jay Eisenhauer is trying to create more housing opportunities for people who want to live in Bethany.
More retirees are selecting to live in Bethany, and more jobs opportunities are available at Bethany College. People who accept those jobs are having a hard time finding housing, but a new housing initiative may help to solve that problem.
That's why plans are underway to build housing in the area.
Eisenhauer, along with the Brooke County Planning Commission and the Brooke-Hancock Business Development Corporation are working all working together on a housing initiative that will create more housing opportunities for people who want to live in the area.
"Bethany College is one of the largest employers in the panhandle, and they have a housing need to for some of their faculty and staff,” said Pat Ford, BDC executive director. “So why not work with the college and work with the town to begin identifying where we can look in the town to identify the properties we can work to acquire, clean up, and construct housing to meet the demand?"
Eisenhauer, obviously, is on board.
“One of the questions I get every week is what housing is available in Bethany?” Eisenhauer said. “We have a great demand than supply at this time. I personally believe a lot of people want to live in Bethany,” Eisenhauer said. “They enjoy the lifestyle, they enjoy the small town, and they enjoy the educational atmosphere and the benefits that the college brings to the town."
So far, one property has been purchased for housing redevelopment.
