30-day sentence for baseball bat beating

Updated: Tuesday, August 5 2014, 06:17 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, OHIO -- Yvonne Yost, who pleaded guilty last week to assault for beating a woman with a baseball bat, received a 30-dail jail sentence Tuesday.
Yost was originally arrested with Brian Taggart in June when she used a baseball bat to attack Taggart's estranged wife. Davaina Taggart had to be taken to the hospital for a concussion and bruises.
The prosecutor was pushing for jail time, while Yost's attorney thought that was too stiff of a penalty.
"On behalf of the state, I think this is an egregious act -- assault with a baseball bat,” Prosecutor Michael Calabria said. “And I think it’s egregious, and I think in that such a case, actual incarceration is warranted. There should be actual jail time."
Meanwhile …
“To have a jail sentence for a first offender,” Defense Attorney Costa Mastros said. “I don’t think that would be the right thing to do."
While the judge sentenced Yost to 30 days in jail, he made 23 of those days house arrest and gave her credit for serving 1 day.
So she still has to serve a total of 6 days in jail. She'll also be on probation for 6 months and pay the victim's medical bills.
