Aging pipes are cause of Toronto water main break

Updated: Wednesday, July 2 2014, 05:47 PM EDT
TORONTO, Ohio – Officials said aging pipes are what caused a water main break in Toronto on Tuesday, pushing nearly 300,000 gallons of water out of the ground and onto the street.
Crews were out cleaning up the rest of the mess Wednesday, and a 48-hour boil order is in effect, leaving business owners with the task of stocking up on gallons of bottled water.
“(We bought) probably about 20 gallons because it takes a lot to make sauce and dough, but now we're boiling it so we should be fine for tomorrow,” said Joann Barns, owner of the Toronto DiCarlo’s Pizza.
In the meantime, workers have patched up the water main pipe. It's not clear if that pipe will be replaced.
Water department officials who sent out a water sample that will be tested for bacteria say are at the mercy of the lab. If that sample comes back positive, it could mean a longer boil order for people who live in the area.
People in that area should avoid drinking the water, and they shouldn't brush their teeth with it, either.
