Area Bible school teaching kids to give back

Updated: Friday, July 11 2014, 06:20 PM EDT
WINTERSVILLE, Ohio -- Normally when we hear about vacation bible school, we think it's all about giving back to kids. Well, members at one are church are teaching their kids to give back to the community.
Vacation bible school at the United Methodist Church is not class as usual. In fact, you can say it's kind of like a fundraiser.
"Some people don't have anything,” 14-year-old volunteer Emily Manely said. “They have no food; they have no money; they have no clothes. It's just really sad and we should be an impact for them."
For the past six years, Manely has invested one week of her summer at vacation bible school, giving back to the less fortunate. On Friday, she was organizing canned food that will be donated to a cancer center food bank in Wintersville.
“I think it's important for the children to learn that they need to give back,” Bible School Director Tiffany Manley said. “That there is so much negative with the world around us that is happening, so if they can learn to give back, then that will make a difference when they are adults."
Kids raised more than $2,000 this week to help a local family, and they also will give $1,000 to the Jefferson County United Way.
"We're just really grateful to see the community, especially youth of our community, to get an opportunity to really understand what charity is and what it is to be able to give and help others," said Beth Rupert Warren of the United Way of Jefferson County.
During the past 10 years, the church has raised more than $20,000 giving to people locally and nationally.
