Armstrong Mills neighborhood deemed safe after dynamite scare

Updated: Wednesday, July 23 2014, 12:39 PM EDT
ARMSTRONG MILLS, Ohio – Neighbors were evacuated and an Armstrong Mills barn was burned to the ground around 9 o’clock Tuesday night after unstable crystalized dynamite was found inside.
The Columbus Fire Bomb Squad and several local agencies were at the scene for hours Tuesday because stabilizing the apparent "old" dynamite was an extensive and slow process.
"Our angle of attack is going inside and spraying it with diesel fuel to desensitize it," Belmont County EMA Director Dave Ivan said Tuesday afternoon.
Once they felt it was stable, they burned the barn to the ground.
Early Wednesday morning, residents were allowed back inside their homes. The area has been deemed safe after what some are calling a "lucky" ending to a potentially explosive situation.
