Body of missing Wellsville man recovered

Updated: Friday, August 22 2014, 10:51 AM EDT

WELLSVILLE, Ohio - The body of a missing Wellsville man was recovered by police on Thursday night.
Zane Carter, missing since Aug. 8, was found in a wooded area in the village according to police.
"We were here once, earlier in the week with a GPS, but the body was buried under some brush and they put a tarp over top of it," said Lt. Ed Wilson of the Wellsville Police Department.
Since that night, police have searched round-the-clock in an effort that shifted from rescue to recovery after police revealed their suspicion Tuesday evening-- that Carter overdosed and those with him panicked and dumped his body.
Phone records led police to two individuals, a male and a female, one of which is from the village and the other from East Liverpool, however, Wilson said the information they provided was not voluntary.
"They didn't' come to us, we went to them," Wilson said. "They said he fell, he was unconscious. They panicked, got scared and didn't know what to do and drug him into the woods over there and covered him up. He's been there ever since.  "
Search efforts spanned much of the area, and officials were expecting re-enforcements this weekend to assist in the search.
Wilson did not rule out the possibility of the individuals with Carter on the 8th facing charges, noting that the department and family members were concerned over recovering the body.
However, Wilson said they would review the case with the prosecutor's office before making a final determination.
"We've been on it constantly since day one. I believe every officer here is drug out tired," Wilson said. "Mostly every day we were here until 9:30 or 10'o'clock and we came back out on several different tips on I don't know how many days. We're tired, we're glad it's over and maybe these people can get some closure now."
