JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- Jefferson County Commissioners held a special meeting Tuesday morning to get a status update on the paving issues at the Jefferson County Airpark.
They're dealing with two differing recommendations on how to fix the problem -- one from the engineer actually overseeing the project, and the other from the engineering firm that designed the scope of the plan.
“That correction process/corrective action is going to be a combination of grinding either one-half or three-fourths off of the old section of the runway, which is 3,500 by 60, putting a scratch course down to bring it back up to a grade, then repaving the whole runway," Jefferson County Commissioner Tom Gentile said.
Ultimately at issue was how much to grind down. While it may seem small, Gentile says it could lead to much bigger concerns.
“What we're really being cognizant of is what total thickness of the runway ends up,” Gentile said. “Because the total thickness will tell you how much weight-bearing capacity you have. Our goal is to get the weight-bearing capacity and the runway length and width to accommodate these jets that have a desire to come into Jefferson County."
Commissioners questioned why the problem wasn't addressed during the design and testing phase and hoped this bump in the runway won't take them over the $2 million budget.
“I think if that corrective action takes us slightly outside that budget for unforeseen situation, then we'll have to do it,” Gentile said. “We can't not put the runway back to the proper condition.”
For now, the milling and grinding that began Monday has been halted until commissioners are certain of the best solution.
“This is a long term project,” Gentile said. “For the sake of a day or two, we don't want to make a mistake."
The commissioners will not move forward until they have one agreed upon recommendation between the two engineering entities.
They're hoping to have that to review at 10 .a.m. Wednesday morning when they scheduled yet another special meeting.
