MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va.--

The bitterly cold winter weather is frosting the Ohio Valley.

Many areas have cancelled outdoor events like skiing and ice skating. Garbage collection in most areas, in the Ohio Valley, have also been delayed.

Dr. Chad Anderson, an emergency room physician at Wheeling Hospital, warns people to stay indoors.

"Avoid the outdoors, but if you have to go outside, certainly wear gloves, hats, scarves and face masks," said Anderson.

Anderson said frostbite can happen very quickly and can cause irreversible damage.

"Being outside for just a few minutes can cause problems, " said Anderson. "Pain and tingling is the first two things you will notice and as it progresses you may notice complete numbness and that's from the tissue getting damaged."

He says children and the elderly are more likely to get sick and should be watched closely during this bitter cold weather.
