Good pleads guilty in shooting

Updated: Tuesday, August 19 2014, 12:48 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Bloomingdale’s Rockwell Good contends he was just trying to defend himself when he shot another man in Unionport last fall.
The incident took place along Buckeye Drive in Bloomingdale on Sept. 25, 2014. The victim, John Hartsouk, was shot once in the arm and abdomen.
On Tuesday, a guilty plea was submitted, but a sentencing for Good, who stood before Jefferson Common Pleas Judge David Henderson and admitted to shooting the victim, will have to wait.
Good’s defense -- that he was defending himself -- is the why the prosecution decided a trial may not have had the best outcome. It was one of the main reasons the prosecution went ahead with the plea agreement, which included amending the indictment.
Good pleaded guilty only to felonious assault. The firearm specification was dismissed. He will learn his punishment after a pre-sentencing investigation. Also requested during Tuesday’s proceedings were the results of an evaluation from the Eastern Ohio Corrections Center.
The judge may also decide that Good is responsible for paying the victim’s medical bills.
The victim turned down an opportunity to make a statement Tuesday, saying he may consider making one during the sentencing phase.
While details of the punishment await, Good will remain out of jail on a personal recognizance bond, ordered to have no contact with the victim.
