Grant aimed at Brooke High students being safe

Updated: Tuesday, July 29 2014, 06:56 PM EDT
BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- A $20,000 grant is making it possible for Brooke High School students to remain safe this school year. It’s a grant that will go toward having a deputy at the high school.
“An officer is a very important asset in a high school," Brooke County Sherriff Chuck Jackson said.
Brooke County commissioners received the grant from the Division of Justice and Community Service.
"How many officers you have and where you have them comes back to nickels and dimes,” Jackson said. “It's what you can afford, and the manpower you have available."
The grant money is just a portion of the cost for a Prevention Resource Officer who will work 35 hours a week.
"You have to have a desire there to not only work with the kids,” Jackson said, “but be a law enforcement officer and be a positive role model."
Officials say the grant initially funded two deputies at the school, but there was only enough grant money for one deputy this year.
