Hawthorne gets an additional 18 months

Updated: Monday, August 11 2014, 05:18 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio - Michael Hawthorne, a man accused of an April crime spree that spanned Jefferson and Harrison counties, admitted his guilt to a pair of charges against him in Jefferson County.
With that, he faces an additional 18 months in jail.
In court, Hawthorne, 31, explained to Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge, Joseph Bruzzese what led to the charges.
"I stole a water department van, sir," Hawthorne said.
Because there wasn't enough evidence to show he stole the van, Hawthorne was indicted on the charge of receiving stolen property. And also failure to comply.
"Based on all of the facts evidence the state had available at this time, the receiving stolen property was the most accurate charge," defense attorney Steve Stickles said.
Hawthorne continued  ...
"I was downtown with it and cops pulled up behind me and I took off," he said.
Bruzzese noted that Hawthorne created a substantial amount of risk and physical harm and sentenced him to the recommended 18 months behind bars.
However, that will run back-to-back with the 8 months he's already been sentenced to in Harrison County after he crashed a vehicle into the Woods Food Center in Hopedale.
It's unclear exactly how much Hawthorne will have to pay in damages. Water department officials said they are still working with their insurance and are hoping to replace the van soon.
