Large sinkhole appears on ramp in East Liverpool

Updated: Thursday, July 24 2014, 05:15 PM EDT
EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio -- A large sinkhole suddenly appeared on a highway on-ramp in East Liverpool on Wednesday.
That 2nd Street ramp onto U.S. 30/39 is closed until they figure out what caused the ground to collapse, but that investigation could lead to the discovery of even larger issues.
"The City Street Department was hauling some supplies back to their location. They entered the highway at one point and nothing was wrong and when they came back for a second load, they noticed a very large hole on the on-ramp for the highway,” explained East Liverpool Service-Safety Director Ryan Estell.
The hole itself is about 10 feet wide and at least 30 feet deep.
Estell said that it’s actually wider beneath the pavement. And they are warning people to stay away from the site.
"The walls continue to cave in a little bit more so people who see the hole aren't seeing the full size of it because its undermining under the asphalt itself at this point, which is why it’s very crucial for people to stay away,” he said. “They don't know how much danger they are in on that site."
The Ohio Department of Transportation was contacted to investigate further on how the sinkhole could be repaired.
Also, the city's wastewater department will soon investigate what caused the roadway to collapse.
"Were waiting for our wastewater department whose charging up the camera system that they have to send through a storm sewer that we believe has collapsed underneath the roadway and is probably the root cause of this," Estell said.
They will also check if there are any voids under the highway itself to make sure that it is still safe to travel on.
Estell says they are unsure when the ramp will open back up again. It will probably take months to repair.
