Tuesday morning, a Jefferson County man pleaded guilty to raping a then 12-year-old girl twice back in 2012.

Grady Franklin Jr., 33, admitted to the crimes and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 10 years.  In addition, Franklin will be classified as a tier-three sex offender.  If he is released from prison, he will have to register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life within the county he resides.

“This is a horrible crime that only a horrible person could commit, but we are satisfied with the result that he will be sentenced as long as the law will allow,” Prosecutor Jeff Bruzzese said.

Franklin was indicted on the two counts of rape back in December of 2012, after the victim handed over a note to a woman she knew, detailing what happened to her.

Franklin’s defense attorney, Steven Stickles said the agreement reached by both sides was fair.

“Potentially, Mr. Franklin could have, if this matter went to trial, done 20 years to life,” Stickles said.

Stickles said both the prosecution and defense were also pleased that this case did not have to go to trial.

“It causes a lot of pain for the victim.  The victim’s family.  My client.  His family.  It's a difficult situation all the way around,” Stickles said.

The victim in this case, who is now just 13-years-old, was not present for the court proceedings Tuesday.

“She's in school today, which is a better place of her than a courtroom.  No sentence, whether it be life in prison, or other will take away what she has been through,” Bruzzese said.

Franklin was given a few moments to say goodbye to family members who were inside the courtroom on Tuesday.  After that, he was placed in handcuffs and escorted out of the courtroom to begin his life sentence.
