Negotiations continue for Buckeye Local

Updated: Friday, August 15 2014, 11:08 AM EDT
CONNORVILLE, Ohio – There was no resolution in an ongoing contract dispute between the Ohio Association of Public School Employees and Buckeye Local School Board members on Thursday night.
Both sides said they wouldn't leave the table until an agreement was reached, but that did not happen, though it appears that both sides are close. It was not immediately clear when they will meet again, but a strike notice is still in place for 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 25.
"We will meet with OAPSE as quickly as Monday evening if they were to take something back to their people and get it pre-ratified,” Buckeye Local Schools Superintendent Mark Miller said.
That action allowed Miller to hire subs, cancel leave for OAPSE members, and to hire Huffmaster Crisis Response as a precaution in case union members carry out their strike notice.
"They voted to hire Huffmaster and bring people in to take our jobs,” said David green, vice president of OAPSE Local 373. “When we asked the treasurer how much that was going to cost, her answer was, ‘I don't know.’”
With no agreement in place, the process continues. Still, both sides are confident that a deal can be reached.
“We're looking at it from the point of view that we believe we came up with an offer that the board approved of, but they wouldn't ratify it,” Green said. “They didn't want to give us a TA on it to take back to our people.”
“The board still remains hopeful that something will be worked out to avoid or avert a strike,” Miller said.
